It's the quiet moments in the early morning at the shop that I love the most.
It's a time that I use to do finishing work and to have that final time with a piece before it leaves the shop. I'll place pieces in the morning light and cast shadows across the hard lines and curves to see if they're true. It is the moment where every piece shows me their true form. No one else will look at it in the same way, understanding how it began and the beauty and challenges that arose. It is an interesting relationship between maker and object. Both seem of singular drive and purpose until a compromise is crafted. Both of us must give a little and love the other for what it is and is not. Objects tend to have the upper hand in this marriage though, having the last word forever. Most of all I can have a moment to give thanks that I am able to pursue my Craft and the creative paths of my work. It has never been easy, requiring an almost blind faith, but it certainly has been fulfilling, a lifelong joy and purpose. I hope that I am able to impart these, as well as my passion, creativity and curiosity into all the pieces I make for you and your families. — Ethan Hutchinson
